A CI/CD pipeline the team can run

A pipeline that only one person can start is a script with extra steps. CI/CD counts when a branch runs the checks and a merge can ship.

We introduce the pipeline inside the company that will own it. The first version is short enough that someone other than us can read it.

When it fits

  • Only one person can deploy.
  • Tests run on a laptop, if they run at all.
  • Secrets live in the repository or in a chat history.

How the work goes

  1. Every branch runs the tests and the build. A failure names the command that failed.
  2. Secrets stay in the runner, not in the repository.
  3. Deploy is a separate, boring step with a log, starting with the environments you already have.
  4. We stop when a second person has shipped without help.

Example: run the pipeline

Pipeline

Press run. Test, build, and deploy are the path the team can repeat.

  1. Test
  2. Build
  3. Deploy

What you receive

  • Checks that run on the branch, before review finishes
  • A deploy log a teammate can read
  • One other person who has shipped with the pipeline

How to start

Send where the code is hosted, how you deploy now, and the environments you have. Email it to info@developerlab.nl, or see the contact page for other ways to reach Puya Sarmidani.
